how this could work

I'm hoping that this will become a link up point for those who want to be walked home and those that are willing to escort. I have already been asked if it's just for SF, but heck, let's try the whole Bay area and see how it goes.

In the subject if you need a walk put the date and where you are then let us know a bit about yourself in the message. I think through tribe and seeing who the escorts are related to in our friend pool will provide us with the ability to judge if that person is a good escort for us.

If you do volunteer to escort and are turned down, please do not take this personally! it is the other person's deciscion and they may have reasons that you will never understand. Don't let this stop you from offering again.

If you are in need of a walk home, perhpas you might offer the escort an appetizer from the great menu where you work or a drink on your bill. I think there is a possibility for us to meet some great people out there with a new twist!

thanks!

      Hey Steph,

      Great idea indeed!

      Here is my question though:
Recently I was walking down Mission (kinda late at night) and found myself walking in the same direction and about the same speed as a woman who was walking alone. In order to make her feel a little bit safer, I ended up walking in front of her. During this time I thought "wouldn't it be great if I could somehow identify myself as a safe person and we could walk together for our mutual safety?"

Just a thought to pose to the group, I don't even know if this possible. I just often find myself walking in the Mission at very random times, and there is only about one day a week that I really follow any kind of a schedule.

      - Thanks

i'm a walkin fool. seriously. i've logged a buncha mission miles in the past 3-4 years that i've lived here. any day/night, just about any time.

i've also posted elsewhere about some of my own particular walkin-safe techniques, honed over the years.

i would be more than happy to meet up with others as a pedestrian escort to/from mission/dolores/castro places. gratis. (and no, i wouldn't be ignorant to who may be asking and why!)

      great idea steph!

This tribe is a really great idea!
        thanks for starting it Steph!

I know what you mean Chai about wanting to be able to identity yourself to a woman so she knows shes safe....
A few nights ago, i was walking up Mission from 24th st and it was raining...i had an umbrella, and a woman walking the same way didn't....i asked her if she wanted to share since we were going the same way, and she agreed.....i worked the fact that i was going home to my boyfriend into the conversation and she seemed to relax a little, but being queer isnt always a gaurantee that you're safe to walk with, and it would be nice if there was some significant way to establish that you are....

i guess just getting to know neighbors is a good method, but if anyone has other ideas that'd be great!

what about wearing a button that says "I'm safe how're you?"...
talk to people! I feel it's such a shame that we've all bought into the don't talk to strangers phobia. most of us are safe, nice people even if we aren't on tribe
good idea, tho, for trampsing thru tunnels or under bridges at wee hours definitely a good idea, steph
